How to Sanitize Your Makeup

Sanitizing your makeup is essential to avoid acne, bacterial infections and cross contamination. See the below list on how to properly clean products and tools in your makeup bag.

Lipstick/ Lip Pencils

Lipstick and lip pencils are the most used products at cosmetic counters and present the easiest way to get infections. Rule number one, never try on lipstick at the makeup counter unless it is sanitized by a sales consultant/ MUA. At home you can sanitize your lip products by pouring a small amount of 71% alcohol in a cup and dipping the lipstick/pencil into it. Wipe it off with a tissue and you are set. With lip-gloss wands these products are difficult to sanitize therefore if you are sharing or using on others use a disposable lip applicator. Note: Always sharpen pencils before sanitizing them.

Cream Products (Concealer/ Foundation)
It is important to clean cream products as they attract and harbor the most debris from brushes and your fingers. Using alcohol wipes are sufficient for cleaning the lid and outside of containers but will not properly clean the cream product. A must have for me is Beuaty So Clean Sanitizing Wipes. They completelty sanitize and remove debris from cream products. Simply wipe the top of the cream product and its clean! Alcohol on a gauze works just as well.
Powder Products (Eye-shadow/ Blush/ Face Powder)
If for your own use you can simply clean powder products by wiping the top layer of the product with a tissue. This can be done after each use or periodically. Beauty So Clean Cosmetic Sanitizer Mist is my all time favorite to clean powder products. This is essential if you are sharing products or are a professional makeup artist. It sanitizes and dries the product within seconds. With translucent powders, pour a small amount of product in the top this way you can simply sanitize the container top with an alcohol wipe after each use.

Mascara Wands

Sanitizing mascara wands can be tricky. To avoid infections like conjunctivitis as well as stys and irritation, the number one rule is to NEVER share mascara. Cleaning mascara wands with alcohol will ruin the consistency of the product as well as may push bacteria into the tube if not cleaned properly. The only product that sanitizes mascara wands is Beauty So Clean. To be safe 1) Discard mascara after 3 months after opening 2) Never pump the mascara wand as it pushes bacteria into the product 3) If sharing on others (unused) ALWAYS use a disposable mascara wand.

Makeup Brushes

See prior post on how to clean your brushes.

Product Expirations (Once opened):

Liquid Foundation: 3-6 months
Concealer: 6-8 months
Powder/ Eye-shadows/ Blush- 2 years
Mascara: 3 months
Lip gloss/ Lipstick: 1 year
Eye/Lip Pencils: 1 year

How To Have A Pain Free Bikini Wax!!!

Summer is approaching which means its time to pull out the bikinis and show some skin. This also means the necessity of waxing your bikini area before that stroll on the beach. If you are thinking to yourself “ouch, not me”… After this post you will learn tips for a “pain-free” wax experience. Keep on reading to find out how.

1. NEVER schedule a bikini or Brazilian wax right before or after your period.

2. Refrain from sexual activity 48 hours prior to waxing. This will only make the area more sensitive during your wax.

3. Take pain relief medication such as Tylenol or ibuprofen 30 minutes prior to any wax to decrease the anxiety and pain.

4. Be sure that you or your esthetician trims your pubic hairs prior to waxing. The longer the hair the more it will hurt.

5. Apply numbing cream to the area (external area only) prior to waxing. My favorite is Clean and Easy Numbing Antiseptic.

6. Apply pre epilation spray or cream a few minutes before your wax. This will allow the hair to be easily removed from the root. Try Tend Skin (Also apply tend skin to the area after waxing to prevent irritation, bumps and ingrown hairs).

7. Lightly exfoliate the area up to two days prior to your wax. This goes for facial, bikini, legs or any other area to be wax. This will not only help with pain but also alleviate the growth of ingrown hairs and irritation post waxing.

8. Don’t wear tight clothing for at least 24 hours prior to waxing and be sure to shower and change undergarments after activities like swimming and cardio workouts (Also follow these rules 24 hours post waxing).

9. Decrease your intake of caffeine the day of your wax appointment. Caffeine increases your acid levels causing sensitivity.

10. Lastly breathe and try to relax during your wax. Anxiety and tension only makes your experience less pleasurable.

The next time you go for a wax appointment or even wax at home, keep the above tips in mind. I am sure you will thank me. Remember the more you continue to wax removing hair in that area will be come easier resulting in a decrease in sensitivity and pain.

Do You Know Your Skin Type?

Knowing your skin type is very important when choosing skin care products and cosmetics. If you have never had a skin care analysis or facial you are probably among many others that don’t know their skin type. Using products that are not appropriate for your skin type can lead to acne, redness, sensitivity and many more reactions. After reading this post you will know how to determine your skin type as well as learn great tips to achieve healthy skin for your skin type.

To determine your skin type follow these simple steps. As soon as you wake up in the morning or 2 hours after washing your face (do not apply any additional products) take a tissue or piece of paper and wipe or blot your face.

Easy Makeup Application Instructions!

Step 1: Concealer & Foundation

After applying moisturizer and foundation primer conceal any dark areas or blemishes with concealer a shade lighter or exact to your skin tone. Blend concealer with a concealer brush or your ring finger. With a dime size amount of liquid/cream foundation dab a tiny bit allover your face. With your tool of choice (blending sponge or stippling brush) blend the foundation in an upward motion starting with the inner part of your face working to the outer. Set foundation with your powder of choice.

Step 2: Contour & Highlight Face

Define your bone structure through shading and highlighting. Once you are finished applying foundation, brush on a bronzer or powder a couple of notches darker than your skin tone along your temples, jawline and hairline. Blend with a makeup brush for a more natural appearance, where all hard and evident edges appear. On the tops of your cheekbones, smooth on a highlighting product with a universally flattering but subtle gold/shimmer tone to make them stand out. Complete by applying blush to the apples of your cheeks and set your entire face with translucent powder.

Step 3: Eyeshadow

After applying eyeshadow primer apply a medium to light shade over your entire lid. Proceed by applying the darkest shade from the outer corners of your eyelids into mid-crease. Use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend darker eyeshadow into the lighter one applied to the lid. Follow with a touch of your lightest shadow on the brow bone and blend this into the crease. To complete apply black liner to the base of your lid with a slight wing on the outer corner.

Step 4: Highlight Eye Area

Make eyes appear more luminous and open by highlighting. Apply a shimmer complementary to your tone to the inner corners of your eyes, underneath the eye (outer half), down the middle of your nose and above your brows (outer half). You can also lighten up your undereye area with a concealer a shade lighter than your natural tone. This will also rid the appearance of dark circles under the eye. Complete your eye highlights by curling your lashes and applying two coats of black or dark brown mascara.

Step 5: Lips

Protect your lips by first applying a lip balm or moisturizer. Proceed by lining your lips with a shade complementary to your lipstick shade. Draw right on top of your natural lip line with the liner to enhance shape and fullness simultaneously. After your lips have been filled in with color, dab and lightly blend your lips with lipstick(Use a lip brush for longer wear). Complete with a dab of gloss on the center of your lips.

What's In Your Makeup Bag

I wanted to share a few favorite items in my makeup bag. Maybe it will inspire you to try a new product to add to your makeup collection. Check out the list below.

I fell in love with Bobbi Brown Natural Finish Foundatio n about two years ago and have stuck with it ever since. I have other foundations in my case but always seem to come back to this one. It provides a nice sheer glowing finish but is buildable to a medium coverage.

I have two powders in my makeup bag (1) Bobbi Brown Illuminating Finish Powder (2)  MAC Prep & Prime Transparent Powder . Depending on the finish I want I alternate between these products. If I want a matte, even and fuller coverage I use the Bobbi Brown powder and if I just want to set my foundation the MAC powder makes my makeup last all day.

My all time favorite concealer is Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer . It serves a dual purpose for me to conceal dark areas and cover blemishes as well as to highlight and shape my brows. This is a must have for flawless brows!!!

I was a faithful user of MAC's Eye Brow Pencil in Spiked until I ran across NYX Auto Eye Brow Pencil in Dark Brown. Its self sharpening, very pigmented and stays on all day. Most importantly its only $4.

The best eye shadow primer on the market hands down is Urban Decay Primer Potion . It does just what it says making colors more vibrant and eliminating creases.

I have tons of eye shadows but I only travel with my Urban Decay Naked Palette . No matter how may times I use this palette I can always create a different look. It has a great variety of colors, very pigmented and perfect for everyday and special occasion looks.

My favorite gloss is Urban Decay Lip Junkie Gloss in Pinky Neutral . I have never felt a gloss that feels as creamy as this but provides a great shine. Awesome product!

My favorite blush is MAC Peachy Keen . Great color that can act as a blush and highlight.

There’s many, many more products I love but you have to stay tuned for more details in the an upcoming post. Share with me a few of your favorite cosmetic products in the comments below, I would love to hear and try something new!!!

Red Lipstick 101

Many women are afraid to wear red lips for a variety of reasons from not knowing how to choose a shade to thinking red lipstick is only for a sexy event. I’m here to help relieve you of your fear! Keep reading to find out how.

The key to wearing red lips is to choose an APPROPRIATE shade. For work or a conservative event choose a less dramatic shade. For a night out or a formal event a bold or bright red is perfect.

Things to keep in mind when choosing your shade:

Desired look (sexy= bold |  casual=light | fun=bright)

Occasion (office=conservative | formal event=deep)

Skin tone (fair=brick | olive=reddish pink | dark=wine)

What Shade Is Best For You?

                  Skin Tone  /  Shade

  • Pink/ Peach  /  Orange shade
  • Fair  /  Brick shade
  • Golden  /  Wine/cherry or bright coral shades
  • Mature Skin  /  Red/brown shade
  • Bronze  /  Red w/ a peach tint
  • Olive  /  Red w/ a pink tint
  • Dark w/ yellow tone  /  Matte red-orange shade
  • Dark/Deep w/ red tone  /  Wine crème/ stain/ gloss

Applying Red Lipstick

  1. Apply a lip balm/ lip conditioner
  2. Line your lips
  3. Apply lipstick with a lip brush for longer wear and to get the true shade
  4. Line the outside of your lips with concealer or foundation for a clean look

If you are still unsure… You can always opt to wear America’s favorite red, MAC Ruby Woo Its bold, matte, sexy enough for a glamorous event and chic enough for a run to the grocery store. A must have for every makeup bag!!!

How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Did you know that one of the number one reasons your face could be breaking out is because your makeup brushes are not clean or not cleaned properly. Makeup brushes can be a hefty investment and it’s a good idea to know how to clean and maintain them. Keep reading to learn how.

Ideally your brushes should be cleaned on a daily basis, but who has time for that? Try to clean them at least once a week as this will remove old makeup, dirt, bacteria, oil and dead skin.

If you have sensitive or acneic skin buy duplicate brushes or disposable applicators to eliminate discomfort and breakouts.

How to Clean Your Brushes

I. Rinse: Facing down, run your brushes under low pressure water to breakup makeup buildup. Do this until the water runs clear.

II. Cleanse: Place a tablespoon of mild soap or shampoo in the palm of your hand and sweep the brushes back and forth in your hand.

III. Rinse: Run the brushes through low pressure water a second time to remove all soap from brushes. If the brushes are not completely clean repeat steps 1-3.

IV. Dry: With a clean cloth remove excess water and reshape brushes. Place them on a paper towel and hang over the counter to dry overnight.

Additional Tips:

  • For a deep clean soak your brushes in vinegar and water for 30 minutes prior to cleaning them.
  • If you want to clean your brushes daily opt for a brush cleaner spray (Available at most drugstores and cosmetic counters).
  • Remember that most brushes are made of real fur fibers and must be cared for like your own hair. It’s not a bad idea to condition them every once in a while to prevent shedding and maintain a soft feel.
  • Use brush protectors to prolong the life of your brushes.

Simple Skin Care Routine

Ever wonder why your skin isn’t up to par? You may ask yourself, am I using the right products? Why am I experiencing breakouts? Why is my skin so dry? It might be because you aren’t cleansing your skin properly. Follow four simple steps below to improve your skin condition.

  • Removes dirt and grime
  • Remove excess oil on the surface and skin pores
  • Aids the cell renewal process

The skin should be cleansed with a product appropriate for the skin type

Important Tip: Body soaps are not recommended for cleansing the face as they are generally alkaline and strip the skin of its natural protection and moisture.

  • Improve the skin’s texture
  • Further cleanses the skin
  • Balances the skins pH

Important Tip: Toner can serve as a refresher and quick cleanse after a workout or physical activity.

  • Replenishes and balances moisture and oil in the skin
  • Protects the skin
  • Some moisturizes contain ingredients such as humectants that create a barrier and help lock in moisture.

Important Tip: It is especially important to moisturize at night because during sleep your skin renews 30% faster than when you are awake.

  • Protects the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays projected from the sun

Important Tips: Sun exposure is the number one cause of skin cancer and premature aging. Studies have shown that 90% of wrinkles are caused by excessive sun exposure and 10% by the natural aging process. When selecting a sunscreen choose one that has protection from both UVA and UVB rays (with ingredients serving as a blocker or absorber). The number associated with sunscreen is important based on your exposure time or activity in the sun. For example SPF 15 indicates that you can be out in the sun 15 times longer than you could without and protection.
